Senior Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Engineer
Location: Remote, USA
Experience: 5-10 years
Job Type: Full-Time

About DST Engineers

DST Engineers is a leading engineering and consulting firm specializing in energy infrastructure, grid modernization, and renewable energy solutions. We work with utilities, developers, and industry stakeholders to optimize power systems for a sustainable future.

Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior DER Engineer with 5–10 years of experience to lead technical analysis, interconnection studies, and grid integration for Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) such as solar PV, energy storage, EV charging stations, and microgrids. The ideal candidate will have expertise in power systems analysis, interconnection standards (IEEE 1547, UL 1741, FERC, NERC, etc.), DER control strategies, distribution automation systems (FLISR, DACR), and design documentation.

Key Responsibilities

DER Interconnection & Grid Integration:

  • Conduct power system studies for DER interconnection (load flow, short circuit, voltage stability, etc.).
  • Review and ensure compliance with IEEE 1547, UL 1741, NEC, NERC, and state-specific interconnection standards.
  • Collaborate with utilities, developers, and regulatory bodies to streamline DER interconnections.
  • Coordinate DER functionality with distribution automation initiatives such as FLISR and DACR to enhance grid resilience and service restoration.

Technical Analysis & Modeling:

  • Utilize tools like PSSE, PSCAD, PowerWorld, CYME, Synergi, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, and OpenDSS for DER modeling and analysis.
  • Develop and validate DER grid-support functions, such as voltage regulation, frequency response, and power factor control.
  • Evaluate DER behavior within automated feeder reconfiguration schemes and assess impact on utility-operated FLISR/DACR systems.

Project Design, Drawings & Documentation:

  • Develop Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), interconnection drawings, and site layouts using AutoCAD.
  • Prepare Interconnection Facilities Construction (IFC) Packages, including equipment specifications, protection schemes, and relay settings.
  • Support electrical design work for DER projects, ensuring compliance with utility and industry standards.
  • Integrate DER systems within broader distribution automation architecture, considering SCADA, ADMS, and protection coordination needs.

Regulatory Compliance & Policy Advisory:

  • Stay up-to-date with FERC, NERC, state PUCs, and utility interconnection rules.
  • Support utilities and clients in DER policy development, grid codes, and interconnection agreements.
  • Advise clients on utility readiness for advanced distribution automation in the context of increasing DER penetration.

Leadership & Mentorship:

  • Lead cross-functional teams on DER projects from feasibility to implementation.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical training on DER best practices.
  • Promote awareness of distribution automation technologies within internal teams to ensure alignment with evolving utility expectations.

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or Renewable Energy.

Experience & Skills:

  • 5–10 years of experience in power systems engineering, DER interconnection, or grid integration.
  • Proficiency in power system modeling tools (PSSE, PSCAD, CYME, ETAP, PowerWorld, DIgSILENT, OpenDSS).
  • Strong knowledge of IEEE 1547, UL 1741, NEC, NERC, and FERC interconnection standards.
  • Experience in AutoCAD for electrical design work, creating SLDs, and developing IFC Packages.
  • Familiarity with DERMS, ADMS, and SCADA systems for grid integration.
  • Experience in protection coordination and relay settings for DER applications.
  • Hands-on experience or working knowledge of FLISR, DACR, and utility-led distribution automation initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, project management, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Qualifications

➕ PE License (Professional Engineer) or ability to obtain it.
➕ Experience with microgrid design, energy storage systems (BESS), and EV infrastructure.
➕ Knowledge of FERC Order 2222 and state-level DER policies.
➕ Hands-on experience with Python, MATLAB, or scripting for automation of power system studies.
