The base salary for this position is dependent upon experience and location:
$40.29 to $50.36 hourly
Location: Klamath, OR
The SPTO performs primarily as the senior operator of all power equipment at Klamath Cogeneration Plant and Klamath Peakers. The SPTO ensures that all equipment is properly operated in a safe manner and in compliance with all permits, rules, and regulations. The SPTO is expected to cross train in basic mechanical and electrical maintenance, and contribute to a variety of maintenance activities commensurate with their skills and qualifications. The SPTO role is at times an individual contributor, a team member, and often times a group leader. As with all KE employees, the SPTO should continuously strive to better themselves as well as the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet all responsibilities and qualifications of the SPTO and PTO.
- Perform the duties of a SPTO for a minimum of 500 hours.
- Manage and/or administer facility programs. (e.g. Hazcom Coordinator, PSM Coordinator, Safety Committee Member, etc.)
- Complete the SPTO qualification standard and demonstrate understanding of all systems and processes. This includes successful completion of an oral board.
- To the extent qualified, perform mechanical and electrical maintenance.
- Be proficient as a watch stander of all watch stations and provide supervision.
- Possess a high level of system and integrated process knowledge of all power equipment.
- Act as team leader while on watch, and be responsible for the safe and proper operation of the plant. Duties include but are not limited to: coordination of all maintenance activity, efficient operation of the plant, and managing other on-watch technicians.
- Actively participate in the training and qualification of team members.
- Continually evaluate and prioritize plant conditions (steady-state, transient, & upset) and act to control, contain, and restore plant operations in a safe, appropriate, and environmentally compliant manner. This includes developing solutions to complex problems and providing advice as needed.
- Perform extensive troubleshooting, calibration and repairs to plant equipment as needed and direct work activities as necessary. This includes being proficient at developing and analyzing trends as a troubleshooting tool.
- Oversee the safe and proper operation of the water treatment facilities. This includes evaluating lab test results and taking proper action based upon these results.
- Assess plant conditions and call management or other resources, within established guidelines, for assistance or support as needed. The SPTO is accountable and expected to find potential solutions to complex problems and bring those solutions to bear when calling resources.
- Seek out and anticipate what maintenance is scheduled and then coordinate, approve and provide safety clearance tag-outs and other necessary permits as required.
- Monitor and interpret plant emissions and discharges and act to maintain compliance with all applicable laws, permits, provisions and orders.
- The SPTO is also responsible for bulk & specialty chemical inventory and off-loads including Anhydrous Ammonia, Caustic, Sodium Hypochlorite and Sulfuric Acid and vendor supplied chemicals. All of these chemicals are extremely dangerous and the SPTO needs to ensure that approved procedures are being followed.
- Use and contribute to the facility computerized programs such as MP2, T3000, SAP, DCS, PI, KE Intranet, and others.
- Train and mentor plant operations staff.
- Perform administrative and supervisory duties in support of various plant goals such as: environmental reporting, safety reporting, purchasing, quality programs, heat rate improvement, continuous improvement, safety and environmental compliance training and technical training.
- Take the lead and supervise, individual, or team roles to solve routine or non-routine issues.
- Analyze individual performance and provide guidance and/or feedback.
- Maintain a high level of understanding of the merchant power business, and utilize that knowledge in decision-making, suggesting changes, or improvements to the overall plant operation.
- Communicate regularly with Avangrid Renewables Energy Management representatives including; Balancing Authority Operator and NCC Operators to manage requirements required by the company.
- Communicate regularly with on-site staff to optimize plant output and fuel usage.
- Maintain a positive working relationship with internal and external customers.
- Develop individual skills through training, technical manuals, and other means to be able to act as "system expert" in one or more technical areas for the purpose of maintenance, testing, tuning, training, and warranty situations.
- Coordinate and support vendor activity as required.
- Supervise and direct contractors for outage and non-outage work.
- Adhere to effective internal controls.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of seven years of experience as a SPTO in power plant operations including all associated auxiliary and support equipment. (combined cycle and peaker experience is mandatory or completion of PTO and SPTO qualifications at Klamath with 500 hours of experience as the SPTO.)
- Ability to read, comprehend, and abide by all Environmental, Health, & Safety documents, programs, and procedures.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and utilize drawings and technical manuals.
- Proven successes in completing a respiratory evaluation and fit test.
- First aid and CPR Certified
- Strong communications skills and Office software.
- Strong team work skills and ability to participate in committee meetings
- Have and maintain a current Oregon driver’s license
- Be proficient at Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel. This includes being proficient at writing a (finished product) technical paper and develop spreadsheets to support the business.
Qualifications
- AS or BS college degree.
- Steam plant technical training.
- Gas turbine technical training.
- Water treatment technical training.
- Other process control technical training.
