Senior Structural Engineer

Our client, a prominent player in the Defence & Security sector, is currently seeking a Senior Engineer for Structural Engineering (Specialist Structures) to join their team in Barrow-In-Furness. This is a contract role within the Defence industry, specifically focused on submarine solutions. The position will involve working on site for the first 6-9 months.



Key Responsibilities:



Building submarines and naval structures

Performing calculations to ensure structural integrity

Handling blocking, handling, jigs, and transport requirements

Conducting Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

Ensuring designs are fit for purpose and safe

Reacting to build requirements and being present on site as needed

As a Senior Engineer, you will work within a dual-function team of 14 professionals, responsible for engineering assessments and supporting the build process. This involves collaboration with design teams to produce safety-critical equipment and supporting operations during production.



Analysing and designing complex steel structures using Eurocodes, British Standards, and internal standards.

Applying knowledge of regulations and requirements, such as LOLER, weld specifications, and geometric tolerance.

Utilising computer-based analytical techniques, including finite element analysis, CAD modelling, and engineering schematics (Abaqus, S-Frame).

Supporting manufacturing, assembly, lifting, handling, and installation processes of submarine structures and components.

Considering facility and site restrictions for the shipping, handling, alignment, and installation of large structures.

Producing concept drawings, layouts, and technical outputs to meet contractual and budgetary demands.



Job Requirements:



Expertise in structural steel analysis and design; experience in timber and concrete design is beneficial.

Hand analysis and design techniques including report writing.

Understanding of Eurocodes and British Standards; knowledge of Lloyds Rules, Naval Design, and DNV advantageous.

Experience in reviewing and checking design outputs, including steelwork detailing, bolted and welded connections, and geometric tolerances.

Good understanding of mechanical engineering, structural steelwork, and knowledge of lifting handling and LOLER.

Working knowledge of ABAQUS, S-Frame, Foran, MathCAD, and Excel.

Previous experience in a production environment, particularly in marine production, would be advantageous.

Membership in a Professional Institution such as IMechE, ICE, or IStructE. Holding or working towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status, with the aim of progressing to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
