Structural Fitter

The Fitter is responsible for the layout, fit, and fabrication of metal components to assemble built-up members, fabrication of structural I-beams, fabricated cold form (thin gauge material), and plate steel. The Fitter will utilize hand tools and welding equipment while following shop details specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Read blueprints or other specifications to determine the scope of the work and the materials required.
  • Align parts using jacks, turnbuckles, overhead cranes, pins, wedges, and hammers.
  • Measure and mark materials to specifications per blueprints.
  • Identify parts for assembly in the proper order.
  • Cut and wash materials with torches (Oxy Fuel or Plasma) according to specifications.
  • Tack weld pieces together as needed.
  • Remove Rust, mill scale and foreign objects using grinder with wire wheel or wire brush to ensure proper cleaning of parts.
  • Operate forklift to move materials and components as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in metal fabrication, fitting, or welding.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret blueprints and other technical drawings.
  • Ability to use hand tools, welding equipment, and other fabrication equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy materials and components.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a high attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, bend, twist, and reach for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work in an environment that may be noisy, dirty, and/or require personal protective equipment.

Working Conditions:

  • The Fitter will work in a fabrication shop environment, which may include exposure to heat, noise, dust, and fumes.
  • The Fitter will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, welding masks, and gloves.
