Job Description:
The Structural Test Manager is responsible for overseeing all operations within the structural test facility, ensuring that tests are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with engineering specifications. This role includes managing personnel, maintaining the test facility, and coordinating the execution and reporting of structural tests. The Structural Test Manager will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including design, stress, and mechanical engineering, to ensure that testing activities support certification and product development goals. The position requires strong organizational, technical, and leadership skills to manage complex testing processes and ensure compliance with industry regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Test Facility Management: Oversee the daily operations of the structural test facility, ensuring the facility is well-maintained, operational, and compliant with safety standards.
- Personnel Management: Supervise and mentor a team of engineers and technicians, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback to ensure efficient test execution and adherence to procedures.
- Test Planning & Execution: Lead the design, construction, and preparation of test fixtures and test articles according to engineering specifications. Manage and execute long-term full aircraft fatigue tests and other structural tests.
- Test Documentation & Reporting: Write comprehensive certification test plans, conduct tests, and compile detailed test reports, ensuring that all data and results are accurately documented for regulatory review and compliance.
- Collaboration: Work closely with structural, mechanical design, and stress engineering teams to develop test plans and troubleshoot issues. Ensure alignment with the overall design and certification process.
- FAA Coordination & Compliance: Supervise conformity efforts for tests and coordinate with the FAA to arrange for test witnesses, ensuring that all regulatory requirements are met.
- System & Equipment Management: Manage the implementation and operation of the full aircraft load control system, including hydraulic actuators, data acquisition systems, and load/displacement measurement tools.
- Safety Oversight: Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and standards to prevent injury, ensure the safety of personnel, and maintain the integrity of the test facility.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor of Science (BS) in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in structural testing or a related field, with at least 2-3 years in a managerial role.
- Proven experience with aircraft load control systems, fatigue testing, and the operation of hydraulic systems.
- Skills & Abilities:
- In-depth understanding of hydraulically actuated systems and load control software.
- General knowledge of data acquisition systems and measurement techniques for load and displacement.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and test plans.
- Basic understanding of aircraft structures and related regulatory standards, particularly FAR Part 23 or Part 25.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to write clear and comprehensive test plans and reports.
- Ability to manage and lead cross-functional teams, providing mentorship and training as needed.
- Additional Requirements:
- Familiarity with FAA certification processes and requirements for structural testing.
- Experience in a test lab or aerospace testing environment is highly desirable.
- Work Environment:
- The Structural Test Manager will be exposed to variable working conditions, including hot and cold environments typical of an aircraft hangar or test lab setting.
- Exposure to moderate to high levels of noise from test equipment and hydraulic systems is common.
- The role requires working in a test lab environment with actuated components, where strict safety protocols are essential to ensure the safety of all personnel.
- Physical Demands:
- Frequently lifts, carries, and moves objects weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted as part of daily tasks.
- Regularly engages in physical activities such as bending, stooping, crouching, and climbing to perform testing and maintenance duties.
- Constantly observes, inspects, communicates, and exchanges information with team members to ensure the proper execution of job functions.
