Mesa Associates, Inc. is looking for a Substation Protection & Control (P&C) Engineering Associate to join our team in the Lakewood, CO office. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design of deliverables associated with substation P&C design projects supporting large electric utility clients as well as renewable projects. Primarily, the renewable projects are connecting utility scale solar farms, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and large wind farms to the connecting utility through substations. Collection design is currently completed by separate group. Our team meets in the office at least 2 days per week for collaboration and training purposes.
These substation deliverables include, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC & DC schematic diagrams, relay panel elevations & wiring, supervisory & control drawings, electrical vendor equipment wiring diagrams and complete cable schedule and bill of materials. The new employee will be taught wiring design and then will progress to schematic design. The position will report to a professional engineer (P.E.) and will work directly with experienced engineers and designers. The primary duties include:
- Perform 12kV to 500kV substation P&C design, including the preparation of drawings and specifications.
- Perform careful self-checking review to ensure the quality of work after it is presented to senior design reviewers.
- Prepare construction drawings of a complex nature with neatness and a minimum of errors using computer assisted design (CAD).
- Perform engineering calculations such AC and DC load calculations required to properly size auxiliary systems.
- Ensure all designs conform to our client’s and industry standards.
- Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager, client, and others as needed.
- Utilize client and/or company information system to track and update design activities.
- Attend project meetings to understand full scope of work.
- May provide field support during construction.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Annual Salary Range:
$65,000 - $97,000
The expected compensation is a range determined by factors including but not limited to education, experience, and qualifications of the candidate, internal equity, work location, and hiring department’s fiscal resources.
