The Machine Shop Machine Set-Up and Operator prepares production equipment to manufacture machined products, focusing on machine set-up, operation, troubleshooting, productivity, quality, continuous improvement and safety.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Primary function to set-up & operate all assigned production equipment including startup, shutdown, total set-up, materials handling, and feeding of production for machines including manual and/or computer controlled turning and machining centers such as Burgmaster, CNC vertical mills, and lathes, Swiss lathes, manual machining equipment, auxiliary support systems, new and specialty equipment.
  • Chooses, aligns, and securely attaches holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and other materials on machines.
  • Measures finished parts with precision tools, ensuring compliance with function, quality, and cosmetic specifications.
  • Observes each machine to verify quality performance.
  • Prepares fixtures and feeding devices, starts machine, and engages feed.
  • Maintains logs and records of units produced including a record of errors resulting in rejected or discarded pieces.
  • Inspects equipment prior to use to ensure proper setup and alignment; performs basic and routine adjustments and maintenance.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and orderly work area.
  • Perform light maintenance functions including change machine filters, check and grease machine slides, check and change coolant, scrap removal between materials changes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Reports to department lead, supervisor and/or manager.


Requirements:

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to follow directions and work well in a team.
  • Ability to interpret and translate engineering designs and documentation.
  • Thorough understanding of or the ability to quickly learn production equipment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of and the ability to abide by applicable OSHA and environmental regulations.
  • Collect, analyze and interpret data using basic statistical tools such averages, range and graphs.
  • Ability to determine whether machinery is working properly based on specifications for expectations such as fixtures, cutting speeds, or feed rates.
  • Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Basic Quality Standards and Concepts literacy

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Prefer at least one year of related experience.
  • Other certifications, training or requirements as may arise for this position as communicated by management.
  • Completion of on-the-job training may be substituted for educational requirements.
  • Technical/vocational school diploma, associate’s degree in Manufacturing/Technical Programming; OR completion of a full apprenticeship program; OR successful completion of suitable company training required.


Physical Requirements:

  • Physical ability to operate and repair machines
  • Prolonged periods working on feet, using tools, and performing repetitive actions that entail frequent bending and stooping.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at a time or move or position objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Visual acuity to read instructions, operate machines, and inspect parts produced.
  • May be required to repetitively move or position materials, tools, equipment and objects above and below shoulder level, and from side to side of body.
  • May be required to communicate, discern, convey, or exchange information with other teammates.
  • Must be able to wear all personal protective equipment at all times during work hours as required by company safety rules.
