Position Summary:

USAMRIID, located at Fort Detrick, Maryland, works closely with other U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC) organizations, Department of Defense (DoD), the Interagency (including Interagency Laboratories), and private companies to accomplish its mission of protecting the Warfighter from biological threats and being prepared to investigate disease outbreaks or threats to public health. This includes conducting Research, Development, Testing, & Evaluation (RDTE) of medical countermeasure against biological threats and the safety, quality assurance, project management, and core support required for these research activities.

The Molecular Biology Division works to combat biological threats and weapons of mass destruction by developing high-throughput sequencing and protein profiling to identify emerging pathogens. It also evaluates and improves medical countermeasures, follows the DoD's roadmap for their development, and ensures their ethical use, including FDA approval. The Division also explores expanding indications and combinations with existing countermeasures.

The Systems Biology Staff Scientist shall provide support to Systems Biology Branch tasks, including sample collection and processing, team leading and study design, and data analysis. This includes, but is not limited to, verifying assay performance, establishing sample repository, leading testing activities, and developing novel sample processing procedures. These areas will be developed within the Center for Genome Sciences and through collaborations both within and outside of USAMRIID for host characterization using Omics (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and epigenetics). Task support may be provided in BSL-3 and BSL-4 containment therefore enrollment in BPRP is required. This position is contingent upon contract award.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Generate and execute protocols for the Systems Biology Branch at the Center for Genome Sciences. Perform and develop protocols for transcriptomic and proteomic (bulk, single cell and spatial), metabolomic in samples from in vitro cultures, animal model or human samples for host respond characterization to pathogen infection or treated with a specific Medical
  • Perform protocols for epigenetic modification in nucleic acids (RNA and DNA). Preparation of transition packages/technical reports/training
  • Perform protocols using microphysiological systems (MPS), including ex-vivo tissues, organs on a chip, spheroids, organoids, and tissue 3D printing. Perform in vitro cell culture techniques to support the
  • Assist in the preparation of transition packages, technical reports, and training documentation. Perform technical literature searches to support and update these protocols and techniques.
  • Prepare technical reports and manuscripts for publication.
  • Establish a biosample repository for evaluation and verification. Maintain a biosample repository for testing both surveillance verification as well as the new surveillance
  • Complete a Project Report outlining protocols, data and standard operating procedures for responsible projects NLT the last day of each month or as
  • Ensure reagents in the lab are not expired and ordered periodically to avoid shortage in reagents and stops in processes. Maintain reagent, sample, and intermediary processes products inventory updated and stored in the designated areas, following biosafety guidance's and CGS protocols. Receive and appropriately storage reagents and samples delivered to the CGS. Support of all associative documentation for supply and equipment acquisition as necessary to complete objectives.
  • The number of deliverables required will vary per year depending on the number of funded projects available, but the typical workload is management and execution of 2-4 projects per
  • Participate in all activities pertinent to lab performance and safety, including weekly lab clean up to avoid contaminations, be primary, secondary or tertiary point of contact for equipment and/or laboratory spaces (POC will be contacted by phone during emergencies, such as alarms or loss of power, and need to respond according to emergency plan for the CGS). Contact commercial company and/or USAMRIID Medical Maintenance or Clinical Engineering (CEB) when an instrument is malfunctioning or needs periodical PM, and escort engineers during the scheduled visit.

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in molecular biology or other relevant field required
  • Experience in BSL-3/4 laboratory
  • Experience with using microphysiological systems
  • Experience with epigenetic modification in nucleic acids
  • Experience and comfort with animal model
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain a Secret clearance
  • Active Secret clearance
  • Must be eligible to enroll in the BPRP and CS-PRP Programs
  • Active BPRP and/or CS-PRP status
