The Welder I position at Ohio Gratings plays a crucial role in the production of high-quality metal grating products. This hands-on role requires experience in welding, blueprint reading, and using material handling equipment. The Welder I is responsible for welding, grinding, cutting, and assembling metal grating products according to precise specifications, ensuring the highest quality and safety standards. In this role, you will work closely as part of a team on the weld line, ensuring smooth production flow, while adhering to safety standards and protocols. You will also be required to report all safety and work-related incidents to supervision or the safety team to maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Fabrication & Welding
- Interpret job traveler instructions and blueprints to accurately layout, assemble, and weld grating products, meeting specific material and spacing requirements—delivering high-quality results that align with our passion for excellence.
- Set up and operate welding equipment according to Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), ensuring the correct gases, wires, and materials are used—demonstrating integrity and precision in every task.
- Pass certification tests, including fillet weld soundness and vertical down position welds, to ensure all work meets rigorous standards—upholding the quality that our customers rely on.
- Apply banding to cut-outs, trim ends, and load bands per supervisory guidelines—ensuring every task is executed with attention to detail.
Material Handling & Equipment Operation
- Safely operate material handling equipment such as overhead cranes, jib cranes, and forklifts to move materials and finished products.
- Operate power tools (grinders, cutting torches, saws, presses) while adhering to safety standards and maintaining high operational efficiency.
Measurement & Blueprint Interpretation
- Accurately read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and assembly instructions—showing attention to detail in every task.
- Utilize both metric and standard tape measures to ensure precise measurements and correct assembly of materials.
ERP System Usage
- Use the Epicor ERP system to document job progress, track materials, and manage time and inventory—contributing to the efficiency and accuracy of our operations.
Quality Assurance & Documentation
- Conduct visual inspections of welds and assemblies to ensure adherence to quality and safety standards—reflecting our dedication to "Make it Right and Ship When Promised."
- Accurately complete required documentation for inventory, timesheets, and inspection reports to ensure full traceability and compliance.
Housekeeping & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace, reflecting our values of care and respect for our associates and the workplace environment.
- Support scrap reduction initiatives by following precise procedures and ensuring efficient material use.
- Cross-train and assist in onboarding and training new hires, sharing your expertise and helping build a strong team culture.
Safety, Quality, & Equipment Maintenance
- Operate tools and equipment safely, following PPE requirements and adhering to company protocols to ensure a safe work environment.
- Promptly report safety concerns or maintenance issues to supervision or the safety team, maintaining a proactive approach to safety.
- Be able to work as part of a team on a weld line, ensuring smooth workflow and collaboration to meet production goals.

Education, Work Experience & Proficiencies
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Proficiency in MIG welding, oxy/fuel, and plasma cutting with Carbon, Stainless Steel, and Aluminum.
- Experience with material handling equipment (overhead cranes, forklifts) and power tools.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and use both metric and standard tape measures.
- Basic math skills, including fractions.
- Experience with ERP systems, preferably Epicor.

- 2+ years of welding and fabrication experience.
- Familiarity with Stick, MIG, and Flux Core welding techniques.
- Experience with forklifts, electric pallet jacks, or similar equipment.
- Completion of a registered welding trade school program.
- Pass a tread certification through training and testing, ensuring the highest quality standards for all grating products.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Physical Requirements: Regular standing, walking, stooping, and bending for 8–10 hours per day. Repeated lifting of up to 75 lbs (with proper equipment).
- Work Conditions: Production floor environment with exposure to noise, dust, heat, and cold. PPE is mandatory at all times, and associates must follow all safety protocols to mitigate risks associated with machinery and tools.
